ABA Therapy is ...

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a type of therapy that focuses on improving specific behaviors, such as communication, reading, and academics as well as adaptive learning skills, such as dexterity (fine motor skills), hygiene, self care and independence, punctuality, and competence at assigned tasks. ABA therapy aids children and adults with psychological disorders in various settings, such as schools, workplaces, homes, and clinics. It has also been shown that consistent ABA can significantly improve behaviors and skills and reduce dependence for special services.

The ABA Therapy process

An ABA therapist works with families and individuals set goals for their child and achieve positive outcomes. The process is as follows:

  • Determine behaviors that require change

  • Set goals and expected outcomes

  • Establish ways to measure changes and improvements

  • Evaluate where you are now

  • Learn new skills and/or learn how to avoid negative behaviors

  • Regularly review your progress

  • Decide whether or not further behavior modification is necessary

The length of time spent in ABA depends on the severity of the problem and an individual's rate of improvement.
