A non-standardized assessment or informal assessment are used by therapists to observe a child’s strengths and abilities and challenges to target during therapy. Non-standardized assessments are an effective measure a child’s skills or progress, but they do not provide comparatives to a group of age peers.

An example of a non-standardized assessment could be a therapist showing a child a book of pictures, and counting how many pictures they can name before therapy. The Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessment consists of a combination of observation, narrative and social assessment. Join the CPD to understand approaches to informal assessments and tools used by therapists with children on the autistic spectrum.
