Having to raise a child is one of life’s defining moments, from the time you discover you’ll be having one to cradling your baby in your arms. In the instant that you see your infant’s eyes, the world stops and for the first time in your life, you feel truly selfless. You’d do everything for your child.

Some parents are just a little different from others. Raising a normal child is one thing, but having to take care of your child with special needs like Down Syndrome, is a whole other experience. The truth is, it will be difficult and it takes a lot of hard work and patience but it could easily be the best thing that could happen to your life.

Brand New Eyes

For parents raising a child with Down Syndrome, it’s like seeing the world from a different perspective, with a  brand new set of eyes.

It will make you see things even yourself were not brave enough to notice. There’s just so much opportunity out there for people with Down Syndrome, your child will be  open to a lot of possibilities.

Parenting a child with down syndrome will make you doubt on  how things would work out for your child, especially for those who have a mild intellectual disability. The condition may seem limiting but unlike before, early therapy and innovations in education, opened the doors for children with Down Syndrome to actually complete school and even grow to attend universities.

As you see your child  for the first time, you do not see a baby with Down Syndrome, to you, he/she is just like any other infant.  You will realize as well that the world can be prejudiced.

Not everyone is accepting, some people’s concern is often with malice. You will want to create  a safe and accepting environment for your child and one way of doing it is seeing the world through their eyes.

It is normal to feel anxious and fearful about what the future might come for you and your child.

A Change Of Heart

Raising a child with Down Syndrome could be the most humbling experience that could happen to you. It makes you a better person.

There will be countless days where you would want to give up, and the developments for your child  will take longer than others.

However, there’s a different kind of appreciation when your kid reaches a certain milestone, especially for parents of children with Down Syndrome- more profound, more humbling and gives a sense of gratitude.

You will become more passionate about living with your child,  you will have a change of heart.

You Are Not Alone

There are a lot of support groups for parenting a child with Down Syndrome. The truth is, it’s only getting bigger. Support groups offer a welcoming community for parents to share their stories and inspire each other.

There are various government led initiatives by the UAE government to protect the rights of people of determination. As part of making the UAE the happiest place in the world, the government has set up various forms of support through departments such as Ministry of Community Development and Ministry of Education to ensure people of determination get opportunities in the workplace, school as well as provision of special benefits to aid those who need the extra support.

Do not be afraid to ask for help.  Several clinics concerned with child development are willing to counsel and offer advice for first-time parents of children having Down Syndrome.

We believe that there is nothing more inappropriate than saying someone “suffers” from Down Syndrome-no one really does.
